A Proposal for Marshall

...and a few other tidbits from school:

-Marshall had a student-led conference last week where he got to show me around the classroom and school and show me some things he's doing in class. I asked his teacher how he was doing and she told me he's a great kid and he's ahead of the class! Yay!!

-At school they earn Fox Dollars for being good (or something?). He redeemed his for a day of being his teacher's helper. What a sweetie!!

-Last week they had Spring picture day. From how Marshall described it, he was given a Fox Dollar for being best dressed in his class and for behaving in line. :D

-A few weeks ago he told me some girls were chasing him at recess. Today, he came home and showed me a card from one of them that was left on his desk today:

Translation: Dear Marshall, I've been waiting to say this. I LOVE you! And would you date me or marry me when we grow up please, Marshall! Yes or No Sincerely, Aimee

Karate Awards Ceremony

This was Marshall's third semester taking Karate and we've seen improvements lately. At this awards ceremony last Monday night, he went from a green belt to a green belt/black stripe, skipping the green belt/blue stripe. This means he tested well enough to skip a level. I caught a glimpse of his surprise and excitement about this when his teacher handed him his new belt and certificate. Here he is with his Sensei

Here is Marshall doing the 20-step Kata

First Grade at Public School

With the baby coming soon I thought it would be beneficial to enroll Marshall in public school beginning in January after Winter Break. I know I won't feel up to homeschooling him for a couple months after but didn't want him sitting around bored all day.

We went up to the school the day before their break to enroll him. While filling out the paperwork, the school counselor introduced herself to Marshall. Later, when I asked what he was most excited about, he told me having lunch with her.

He was super excited for his first day of school! You know how you read about some kids who are up and ready for the first day at 6:00? Well not Marshall! WE had to wake HIM up at 7:45 to get him going! Definitely a first around here. Usually the boys are up before us!

Marshall at his desk in the morning on his first day (Wednesday, January 4). You can tell he's excited, but also nervous. John said, as we were walking out of the building, that he looked like a deer in headlights.

But all went well - he came running out to the car and said, "I had a GREAT day at school!!!" Which was music to my ears! Thursday, his second day, went much the same. When Friday morning rolled around however, and John asked him to say the morning prayer, he prayed that school wouldn't be so long that day (school goes from 9-4:00). It will take some getting used to, I'm sure.

On Monday morning he had a huge meltdown and did not want to go to school. John and I both tensed up and I noticed we both started to get a little agitated with him in return. As soon as I realized it, and noted our behavior to John, we both calmed down and helped Marshall work past it and had a good morning in the end. I'd hate for him to leave for school feeling the frustration of all three of us throughout the day when he thought of home.

Making morning family prayer a priority has also helped with this. No matter how hectic things were growing up, my mom always made us say family prayer before leaving for school (or even sometimes in the car on the way to school). I know that it gave me a feeling of peace and comfort throughout my school day and want that for my kids, too. It really does set the tone for your day and I know it gives kids the confidence and security they need to succeed!

Little brother after dropping Marshall off at school his first day.

A common question I'm getting is how Coen is fairing in all this. As we left the school without Marshall last Wednesday, he suddenly stopped mid-track and asked why Marshall wasn't coming with us. I've never seen his lower lip stick out so far and tears of sadness followed. We went home and played with his castle and knights, his current favorite, for about an hour and after that there was no talk about Marshall the rest of the day.

As soon as Marshall got home, though, there was instant antagonizing from Coen. He would not let the poor boy alone! It's as if he was catching up on all the day's mischief and sibling rivalry, but also sending the message that he missed him and just wanted him to play. It's sort of endearing in a very annoying way.

On Thursday morning Coen cried as John left to take Marshall to school. On Friday he was asleep when they left but as soon as he woke up and realized his brother was gone, he was sad once more.

Yesterday he did fine and asked if we could go shopping at Target to use the "toiwets." Which is so hilarious because each time we're there, either he or I do indeed end up in the restrooms. And today, he wanted to go swimming. Ha ha!

We're settling into a rhythm and it's been good!

In case you need a laugh...

  • On Saturday night we were at a friend's house for a New Year's Eve party and someone said they had sent a carbon copy of an email to so-and-so. A lightbulb went off in my head - "OH!!! That's what CC means in emails?!"

In case you're not laughing yet I'll share one more.

  • This is a facebook conversation I had with a friend earlier today. I kid you not.

Christmas 2011

Christmas Eve day was spent getting ready for Santa to come. We told the boys he was looking to see if their room was clean enough and if they deserved new toys. They BARELY made the deadline to call Santa before he left the North Pole. Phew!

John loves his Mom's homemade tomato soup that she used to make every Christmas Eve. We barely got the call into them in Germany to see what ingredients we needed before the store closed! It was delicious and we made some toasted French bread to dip in it. Yum!!

After dinner John and the boys needed hair cuts so I clipped away. Then we sent them off for baths. The Pajama Fairy came while they were cleaning up!

Coen absolutely loved getting to open a present and didn't mind the fact it was pajamas. In fact, he loved that they were robot jammies!!

Marshall knows the jammies as a tradition, Coen was a little stumped and was ready to go open the other presents (that weren't even there yet).

They each got a badly needed 2 pack! Yay for new jammies!!
(And yay for me taking them back to Target to get the price adjusted when they went on sale the DAY AFTER I bought them! Don't you hate that?! But I'm glad I caught it!!)

After they were all snuggly and warm in their new jammies, we sat down to talk about why we celebrate Christmas.

John read to us from the Bible.

These 2 rascals 'followed' along,

one more so than the other.

Marshall ran around as Rudolph.

Coen joined in his reindeer games.

We missed Grandpa Bradley's rendition of the red-neck Night Before Christmas story, but the classic version had to do.

Pictures in their new jammies by the tree, sans presents because you can imagine what would have happened had I left any out before Christmas!!

Christmas Night!!

The children were nestled,

all snug in their beds,

while visions of doggy bones danced in their heads.

Christmas Morning!! Marshall woke up about 6:30 and we told him to go back to bed until 7:00 while we came to. Are we mean or what?!

Then they patiently waited while John (bless his heart) got the sweet rolls and Christmas Casserole into the oven to bake while we unwrapped.

The kids got hot chocolate, bubble tape, play-doh (leftover from a 24 pack at Easter, haha! Santa and the E.B. are tight, you know.) and of course, an orange.

Pleased with the bubble tape. Christmas could have ended here.

His own "fackry guy"! (Factory, as in Lego Hero Factory) He was covetous of the one Grandpa gave Marshall when he was here, so he left me money to get Coen his own.

Marshall loved the hot chocolate pouches from his stocking...until Coen opened them and dumped them on Marshall's bed.
A very Merry, indeed.

The Nerf he wanted from Santa! (Live reaction at the bottom of post)

Coen was so excited to get his very own Ninjago guys from Grammy and Grandpa Kirk! No more sneaking big brother's.

The boys each gave each other a Lego set.

A thank you hug!

Coen was making a nice little pile as he opened his presents. The only problem was he went smallest to biggest and it tipped over right after I snapped this.

Coen got some Super Hero playsets thanks to a Hasbro Groupon several months ago. Love Groupon!!!

I've been skeptical about buying these Lego games - just more pieces to keep track of. But this is actually really cool and the other 3 Heroica games add to it! Highly recommend.

In the hopes of turning Marshall into a nerd, I also got him a physics workshop and an add-on set to his circuit board he got last year. Grammy got him a Zoob alien, too.

Grandma Sarah sent some wooden swords. The boys love them despite the bruises and cuts they've already accumulated.

Missing Grammy's toy castle, Marshall asked her for one for his house.

Uncle Brandon induced big smiles with this Ninjago helicopter!

Coen is a natural at sports-related things, so Santa thought a softball stand would be good.

Putting together the first of many more Lego sets. This one a Hero Factory from Grammy.

A new Razor scooter was hiding behind the tree for Marshall and we'll pass his 3 wheel one from 4 Christmases ago onto Coen.

Despite my misgivings about pulling the boys away from their new toys on Christmas to go to church at 11, it ended up not being the battle of tears I thought it would be. The boys knew ahead of time that we were going, I think that helped. It was also helpful that we got an early start and had 3 good hours before we had to start getting ready for church. They also knew it would JUST be sacrament, just 1 hour, then we could come home and spend the rest of the day playing. They did great and the service was beautiful. I always love the Christmas musical numbers.

P.S. That's the newly built Kansas City Temple!!

After church the boys helped Dash open the presents they each picked out for him. Marshall wanted to get him a pull toy and Coen wanted a "really BIIIIIG bone."

Dash was so excited about his new peanut butter flavored cane he didn't quite know what to do at first, but he had no time polishing it off in only TWO days! Come to think about it, that's about how long the candy canes on our tree lasted, too. Hmm.

Marshall showing Dash how to play tug-of-war.

And...the reaction to the gun he had been asking Santa for. I thought he would have been more excited.

We spent the afternoon playing with new toys, napping, and talking on the phone or Skyping with family.

That night we had a ham dinner that John made for us (again, bless his heart!). We watched our new copy of Kung Fu Panda 2 that Coen got from Uncle Brandon.

The next day was spent much the same way, playing and eating leftovers. What a wonderful Christmas!!
